The excavations and the study of unique megalithic monuments
Participants Isetsky archeological group of the Institute of history and archaeology, Ural branch of RAS under the leadership of Valentina Viktorova has begun to explore one of the most mysterious types of archaeological monuments — dolmens. They intend to examine the nature of these objects, their age and understand how they were built. Later, scientists hope to develop a special program for the study of Ural megalithic structures of prehistory.
As reported by IPAS Valentine Viktorova, in the next week exploration group Isetsky archaeological team will excavate near one of the dolmens located in the upper reaches of Iset lake near the river moving away the source. Before scientists have a difficult task, you need to determine what is the nature of these megaliths, some of them were created by the man and by what time. After exploratory excavations have been completed, the archaeologists intend to continue the fixation of the objects located in the area and received a code name “isetskii dolmens”.
Recall that information about the presence on the Northern shores of lake Isetsky dolmens appeared a few years ago. The attention of archaeologists at the strange heaps of stones drew historians. However, the first scientists who studied several of these installations have concluded that they belong to the 18th century and was used as a furnace for prigotovlenie. However, last year when re-inspection of this area by a group led by Valentine Viktorova was able to identify several dozens of stone structures and divide them into a few types.
“Most likely, we deal with several types of multi-temporal sites. Some of them smaller might have really later origin. However, there are a number of dolmens built of large slabs, similar to those found in the North Caucasus. There is a very reasonable assumption that these structures have a much earlier age and that we have to check,” said Valentine Viktorova. She also noted that in recent years in the Urals was investigated and found another place with ancient megalithic structures is an island of Faith on the lake Turgoyak.
Based on the results of studies of the Yekaterinburg archeologists intend to establish a comprehensive program to investigate the new Ural type of monuments. And continue their study with the involvement of experts from related fields of science.
For reference: the dolmen — (derived from French and dolmen from Breton tol table and men — stone) is an ancient funerary monument, one of the types of megalithic structures. As a rule, the dolmens are built of huge boulders and slabs of up to several tens of thousands of pounds raised vertically and is covered by one or more plates on top. The main part of the known dolmens were erected in the bronze age and were used as burial chambers for the dead. Earlier in Russia such objects were known only on the territory of the black sea regions of the Caucasus.
The excavations and study of the unique monuments on the island of Faith on the lake Turgoyak. Here in 2003, were discovered megalithic structures, created more than 60 thousand years ago, the old believers ‘ hermitages that date back to the 18th – 19th centuries, as well as products, made by man with the help of stone, belonging to the Neolithic age. This season the team of scientists planning to work with the help of scuba – divers together with archaeologists must descend into the depths of the lake and explore the rocks and muddy bottom, where they could remain historical artifacts.
Senior researcher of Chelyabinsk scientific centre of the Institute of history and archaeology, Ural branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Stanislav Grigoriev noted that today one of the main tasks is preservation of monuments of history – the pilgrimage of numerous tourists detrimental. In addition to organized excursions from the club-hotel “Golden beach” come to the island and “savages” that are destroying the ancient stone masonry, and realitly way gullible patients allegedly once existed “Holy spring”.
To solve the issues of protection of the island, the organisation of scientific work and receive the official status of the Museum, scientists have recently created the public Foundation “Vera Island”. Prior to that all works were supported by the President of the national Park of sports and tourism “Turgoyak” Oleg Sirotina, has provided substantial support and the head of the city administration Victor Ardabyevsky.
